What the extra pane does
An insulated glass unit (IGU) is two or three panes of glass separated by spacers, with a sealed gap between them. Single glazing costs less; double balances cost and efficiency; triple is the most efficient, according to the federal Efficient Windows Collaborative. Each added layer adds a sealed gap that slows heat transfer.
Most of the gain comes from the coatings and gas fill, not just the pane count. Low-E coatings are transparent metallic layers, thinner than a human hair, applied to the glass. Argon and krypton block more heat transfer than air because they are denser. Details are in energy-efficient windows.
Cost: double vs triple pane
These are national figures from published guides, not Reno quotes. Reno pricing varies with size, frame, style and install type.
| Source | Single | Double | Triple |
|---|---|---|---|
| This Old House 2026 survey (average) | $400 | $529 | $609 |
| Fixr (range) | Not listed | $450–$2,000 | $1,000–$4,000 |
In the This Old House survey, triple pane averaged about 15% more than double. Window-company blogs claim premiums of 10 to 40% with no single authoritative number, so treat any quoted figure as the installer's own pricing and ask for double and triple quoted side by side on the same frame. Low-E glass itself runs $300 to $1,100 per window in Fixr's glass-type table. For totals see window replacement cost in Reno.
Reno's climate: where triple pane helps
Cold mornings and winter heating
Reno has about 122 days a year at or below 32°F and about 20.9 inches of annual snow. In the foothills and at Tahoe, winters are harsher. Triple pane tends to reduce cold drafts at the glass and condensation on the room-side pane, which helps most on large north-facing windows and in rooms you sit in by the glass.
Summer sun and the diurnal swing
Reno has about 65 days a year at or above 90°F and a July high-low swing of 33.5°F. In summer, the coating (SHGC) matters more than the third pane. A well-chosen double-pane low-E unit can do most of the work on sun-heavy south and west walls. High-altitude UV exposure was not confirmed by a source, so ask the installer about fading protection.
Wind and sound
Washoe Zephyr afternoon wind and traffic noise are rooms for frame and seal quality as much as glazing. Triple pane can reduce some noise, but thickness and gap sizes vary by product, so compare the manufacturer's sound ratings if noise is the reason you are asking.
Performance ratings to compare
NFRC rates U-factor (how well a product keeps heat from escaping; window range 0.20 to 1.20, lower is better) and SHGC (how much solar heat gets in, on a 0 to 1 scale). Compare labels, not marketing.
| Benchmark | Value |
|---|---|
| City of Reno replacement window minimum | U-factor 0.30 or better |
| ENERGY STAR v7.0 Northern zone | U 0.22 or lower, SHGC 0.17 or higher |
| ENERGY STAR v7.0 North-Central zone | U 0.25 or lower, SHGC 0.40 or lower |
| ENERGY STAR air leakage limit | 0.3 cfm/ft² or lower |
Typical U-factors for double and triple pane were not confirmed by a source here, so use the NFRC label on the specific product. Reno is mapped as Northern zone by ENERGY STAR; Carson City, Douglas and Lyon sit near the boundary, so confirm with ENERGY STAR's Climate Zone Finder.
Tradeoffs of triple pane
- Weight: a third pane adds glass weight, which can mean heavier sashes, stronger hardware and, on large units, a tougher install.
- Frame fit: triple-pane units are thicker, so some frames or insert sizes do not accept them. Check with the installer before ordering.
- Cost: the premium shows up in the national survey data above; the payback depends on your energy use and how long you stay.
- Seal risk: more layers means more seals. Gas leakage in an efficient window is about 0.5% of the fill per year, so a window with gas leaks would still perform at about 90% of its original capacity after 20 years, per the Efficient Windows Collaborative. Failed seals do happen; see window repair and window glass replacement.
Wildfire-area glazing
Washoe County's wildland-urban interface guide requires exterior windows to be tempered glass, insulating dual or triple glazed units, glass block, or have a 20-minute fire-resistive rating. Replacement windows must keep the fire protection the property already has. Multi-pane units commonly meet the dual or triple glazed option, and the fire district sets which ignition-resistance class applies. Your installer can confirm for your address.
A practical way to decide
- Ask the installer for double and triple quotes on the same frame and size.
- Compare NFRC U-factor and SHGC for each, not the pane count.
- Put triple pane where it helps most: large north-facing glass, bedrooms, rooms by the glass.
- Use low-E double pane for the rest if the budget is tight.
- Confirm the permit requirement; City of Reno treats window replacement as permitted, and Washoe County exempts same-opening, same-size replacement in unincorporated areas.
